Thursday a refurb M1 MBA 256/8GB was delivered. Wow, only three years on an 850 EVO! That is contrary to various claims by SSD partisans. But look at the CCC, ChrnonoSync, And SuperDuper sites since they all have instructions on doing clones, although booting from one with the M1's with dead drives is apparently impossible. I have a laptop in addition to a desktop, so I find I don't need them, as I always have a computer up and running while the other gets repaired or a new system installed from backup. Envoy, I think? I guess that means I need to upgrade my 2018 Mac Mini from Sierra to Big Sur so that we will be on the same page. I finished setting it up yesterday, using a SuperDuper cloned volume.

Ironically, we were close to ordering a new portable Mac when this occurred. However, the Samsung 850 EVO that I installed in my wife's 2011 13" MBP around 3 years ago suddenly died last weekend without any warning. I have a Samsung T3 that I've been using for several years with no problems. My 2018 Mac Mini has a T2 security chip as well. I'm debating whether or not to skip making bootable clones but I'm still reading up on the issues with the M1 Macs. Speed doesn't seem to be a critical factor for our uses. I'm looking at the T5 or T7 without the external security button. There is also discussion about the latest version overheating.

But when I checked Amazon I found some disquieting customer reviews regarding receiving counterfeit Samsung SSDs. I'm looking at SSDs and my inclination was to stick with the Samsung T series.
